According
to Milenio, the Ministry of Economy of the Government of the State of Oaxaca
issued a request for a declaration for the protection of the geographical
indication of alebrijes, tonas, nahuales and wood carvings of the central
valleys of the state in order to protect the creators of said crafts for that
they do not lose the rights of their creations.
Places
where it is necessary to reaffirm that they are the creators of these crafts,
as well as give them importance and recognition of the entire process of
creating these, from obtaining wood to uses in commerce.
Said
document confirms that, for the sale of wood carvings or alebrijes from this
region, they must be able to be distributed in stores, streets, carving towns,
by catalog, on web pages and internationally.
He
announced that they work in the same way with textiles, with handcrafted works
of black and red clay so that they also get their registration of industrial
protection before the IMPI.
I think
that this new law is very beneficial for both Mexican culture and its economy,
Mexico is one of the countries with the fewest patent registrations in the
world and it seems unfair to me that countries like China plagiarize the
identity of Oaxacan crafts, that steal the models to commercialize the pieces
in series and resell them in the national market, but with poor quality or like
foreigners who take the handicraft models and patent them in other parts of the
world. With this new decree the identity and economy in Mexico is protected, in
addition to making fair payment to Oaxacan artisans for their work.
